FGIDs: Expert Recommendations

While Guidelines Recommend Parental Reassurance and Diet/Lifestyle Changes for all FGIDs, each specific condition requires specific management.

Management Guidelines (Adapted from Nice, 2015)

Regurgitation1-3

Infantile colic3,4

Continue breastfeeding

Parental education & reassurance as the first line of management
Formula fed infants:
  • Review feeding history
  • Reduce feed volumes
  • Offer trial of smaller, more frequent feeds
Offer trial of thickened formulas
  • No pharmacological recommendations
Formula fed infants:

If cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is not a poetential cause, offer a formula with partially hydrolysed formula with prebiotics + B-palmitate and reduced lactose

Pharmacological therapy is ineffective

Provide information on normal infant defecation patterns

For formula fed infants, verify proper formula preparation
